"elaineMy name is Elaine Monteith and I work for ENABLE Scotland having overall responsibility for the Edinburgh and West Lothian area. I have always had a keen interest on health inequalities for people with a learning disability in terms of barriers in accessing services both in the community and within a hospital setting. Given the large scope of any potential research, it was important I chose an area of research which was both current and manageable in terms of size and subject. My research focuses on “The barriers and enablers for women with a learning disability accessing cervical screening services”. My aim is to ensure that by the findings of the research project I will be able to identify the potential barriers for women with a learning disability accessing cervical screening services. By identifying these, I would anticipate that the uptake of cervical screening services would increase once direct support staff were provided with the necessary knowledge in how best to support someone to access this service.
