This was our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/07\/Programme5.pdf\">programme<\/a> for the day and we decided our goals would be to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete community mapping (from last meeting)<\/li>\n<li>Introduce approaches to improvement<\/li>\n<li>Develop improvement ideas to trial<\/li>\n<li>Agree homework and next steps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Connecting up<\/h4>\n<p>For\u00a0homework, people had been asked to identify 12 songs or pieces of music that were particularly meaningful to them, and say why. We shared the chosen songs \u00a0as part of our ice-breaker using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/uk\/\">spotify<\/a> and Youtube. Everyone loved this! At the previous meeting we had devised a task where groups designed\u00a0their own campaign. \u00a0We re-capped this work and re-played the videos of the groups presenting their campaign ideas. We gave people a choice of 20-30 images and asked them to choose one that\u00a0&#8216;spoke to them&#8217; about person-centred care and support. Most communication, as we know but can forget, is non-verbal. We felt this was important and decided to take our time over any new addition to the map. We didn&#8217;t want to overload the group with too much information in one go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/08\/IMG_3369.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1389 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/08\/IMG_3369-e1428170046809-440x330.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3369\" width=\"440\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/08\/IMG_3369-e1428170046809-440x330.jpg 440w, https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/08\/IMG_3369-e1428170046809-620x465.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/08\/IMG_3369-e1428170046809.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Introducing approaches to improvement<\/h3>\n<p>This video &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hO8MwBZl-Vc\">Leadership from a dancing guy<\/a>&#8216; is\u00a0thought-provoking and identifies certain lessons, including the importance of followers. Key things the video highlights are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous<\/li>\n<li>A leader should be easy to follow<\/li>\n<li>A leader should embrace followers as equals (it&#8217;s about the movement, not you)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But leaders are also over-rated&#8230;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It takes guts to be a first follower. It&#8217;s the first follower who transforms a &#8216;lone nut&#8217; into a leader.<\/li>\n<li>A follower should be easy to follow too. They need to be public as new followers emulate the first follower, not the leader.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Soon you reach a &#8216;tipping point&#8217; and have a movement as more people join in. Eventually those who haven&#8217;t joined in will be the odd ones out. Watch the film and see a movement happen!<\/p>\n<div class=\"nv-iframe-embed\"><iframe title=\"First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fW8amMCVAJQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>We also guided the group through\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/07\/Approaches-to-improvement.pdf\">approaches to improvement,<\/a> a powerpoint presentation, with notes, that we created. This presentation has key pointers about things to consider\u00a0(and things to avoid) when trying to improve something. Thanks to\u00a0Jason Leitch (Clinical Director, Quality Unit at Scottish Government) as his\u00a0presentation at the National Learning Event (People at the Centre of Health and Care, on 27-28 May 2014 in Glasgow) inspired\u00a0much of the content of this presentation. In summary this presentation notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There&#8217;s always room for improvement<\/li>\n<li>Focus on what you can do, not what you can&#8217;t<\/li>\n<li>You choose how you respond to things (take control)<\/li>\n<li>Find enthusiasts to try out new improvements on (not those who are reluctant)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t start with a large test\/pilot<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t try and get one person to do it all<\/li>\n<li>Measure your improvement tests to find out of its been successful &#8211;\u00a0do this often and feedback your results quickly<\/li>\n<li>Strong evidence for innovation is necessary but not enough to result in its adoption &#8211; you need to win hearts and minds<\/li>\n<li>Spread the improvement- pass the baton, find followers and new leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we wanted to pilot\/trial<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, we split\u00a0the whole group into 3 small working groups to develop\u00a0ideas they wanted to trial.\u00a0 As usual, we wanted a good mix of professionals and non-professionals in each group. We asked each group to work through two stages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each working group to identify\u00a02-3 improvement ideas<\/li>\n<li>Share with whole group \u2013 and identify any overlap<\/li>\n<li>Each working\u00a0group to choose \u2018ideas\u2019 they want to work up (at this stage people could change groups if they felt they had more to offer another group &#8211; either expertise or enthusiasm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each group was provided with a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/07\/template-and-notes.pdf\">template and notes<\/a>\u00a0to help them work up their ideas and get members of the group to action certain things that would help them move this on. We also provided them with a summary of things they had earlier said they wanted to achieve and ideas for improvement generated at earlier meetings, so nothing was lost. \u00a0We asked each\u00a0\u00a0group to identify a scribe and reporter (to feedback) their ideas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ideas from stage 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The groups considered the ideas identified in earlier meetings. \u00a0Then, \u00a0building on learning from the community mapping exercise and motivated by what people wanted to achieve, the following ideas were identifed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meeting for carers alone. There is a meeting in Scotstoun and one at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cope-scotland.org\">COPE<\/a> but nothing in the evening. This should provide peer support and be confidential \u2013 without \u2018expert\u2019 leaders. It was seen as an natural outcome from this group, with others invited to join.<\/li>\n<li>More local dementia caf\u00e9s.<\/li>\n<li>Rugby reminiscence\/sport other than football- could be golf or boxing in club premises.<\/li>\n<li>More stimulating activities in centres eg fitness focus, leisure activities, pool table and opportunities for people to use their trade\/skills.<\/li>\n<li>Want to play games and music all year. West end concert hall \u2013 what about the bandstand?<\/li>\n<li>Healthy Food Caf\u00e9 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annexecommunities.org.uk\">Annexe <\/a>(Partick) but would be good to have this elsewhere too. What kind of diet is good for us? In fact, another place like the Annexe would be good.<\/li>\n<li>Nice green places with benches.<\/li>\n<li>Increase dementia volunteers\/befrienders in NW Glasgow. Support for getting people out of the house so not isolated. People don\u2019t necessarily need paid home support, but befriending. Some people don\u2019t like attending groups. Believe they could easily fill any spots. Could model on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiafriends.org.uk\">Dementia\u00a0Friends <\/a>&#8211; \u00a0a network of volunteers developed in England, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzscot.org\/news_and_community\/news\/2960_dementia_friends_programme_stretches_north\">extending north to Scotland<\/a>\u00a0through Alzheimer Scotland.<\/li>\n<li>Ask children in school to volunteer to help? Part of awareness raising around dementia. Also make sure older people get invited to school plays.<\/li>\n<li>Fire and rescue safety checks- training with fire service staff.<\/li>\n<li>More <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nes.scot.nhs.uk\/education-and-training\/by-theme-initiative\/mental-health-and-learning-disabilities\/our-work\/dementia\/dementia-champions-programme.aspx\">Dementia Champions<\/a>, extending it from where it started in acute hospitals \u2013 for local community eg targeting pharmacies and\/or targeting private sector care workers who come \u00a0into peoples\u2019 homes). (Referred to as Dementia Ambassadors in social work).<\/li>\n<li>A searchable online database\/local asset map that can be individualised to support people to do the things they want to do (lined to personal outcome planning\/Talking Points). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliss.org\">ALISS\u00a0<\/a>or visual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.pinterest.com\/en\">Pinterest<\/a>-type models suggested. Would require pooling of knowledge and commitment of all to maintain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Each working group chose to focus on one of these ideas:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A dementia caf\u00e9 to run fortnightly in a local venue<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer\/befriending scheme in NW Glasgow (failing that would consider more Dementia Champions targeting people in community and private sector care workers; or searchable online database\/local asset map that can be individualised and linked to someone\u2019s personal outcomes)<\/li>\n<li>A new local carers group that is confidential and not run by \u2018experts\u2019 as a natural outcome from this group that can be extended to others<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Stage 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each group was asked to be responsible for organising a meeting between this meeting and the next\u00a0in October in order to further develop their idea. We asked someone in each group to volunteer to coordinate this meeting. Thanks to Laura K, Katherine and Helen.<\/p>\n<p>We offered to provide neutral meeting space if required, but no one seemed to need this. One group had already found a date and were meeting at a group member&#8217;s house.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Homework and actions<\/h4>\n<p>The homework arose from the actions identified by each group in the &#8216;what we want to pilot\/trial&#8217; activity.<\/p>\n<p>People were also asked to support the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.playlistforlife.org.uk\/donate\/give-an-ipod\/\">Playlist for Life&#8217;s i-pod donation drive<\/a>\u00a0which aims to collect donations of iPods to be given to people who want to create a playlist.
