As a starting point for this discussion we watched video clips showing the perspective of a GP and person who is managing their own health.<\/p>\n<div class=\"nv-iframe-embed\"><iframe title=\"What is Person Centred Care? Part 3 - A GP&#039;s perspective\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y43TLRzal44?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"nv-iframe-embed\"><iframe title=\"What is Person Centred Care? Part 4 - Self Management Support\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x7Zu4P1qK48?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>After watching these videos we felt it would be useful for the group to develop their own language in relation to this term, so people felt confident when using it. To assist people to think through their own definitions, we asked small groups to each devise a person-centred campaign. We set the task out as following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Purpose of campaign:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To help people know what person-centred\u00a0care and support means &#8211; and what they can reliably expect of\/for themselves and others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also consider:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What should it say?<\/li>\n<li>How should it be presented?<\/li>\n<li>How and where could it be used?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the campaigns our 3 small groups came up with:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A mixed media campaign with celebrity endorsement, raising awareness amongst communities about how to support people with dementia.The strap line would be: &#8216;your life- your choice&#8217;.\u00a0The message would be that services should be built around people rather than people being fitted into services.<\/li>\n<li>Awareness raising campaign, possibly a T-shirt to share the message: \u00a0&#8216;Talk to the person not the carer&#8217; or &#8216;See the person not the condition&#8217;. This would be a campaign to reach people on the street and would aim to get away\u00a0from the idea that help always come from services, instead\u00a0all members of the community can help.<\/li>\n<li>This campaign would focus on promoting a person-centred approach for those providing services for example through \u00a0self directed support. A key message would be: &#8216;See me, \u00a0I&#8217;m a person not a condition&#8217; \u00a0or &#8216;Plan with me: respect my choices&#8217;. The campaign wold recognise that people want to be connected to their\u00a0community, it would stress the importance of \u00a0plain language avoiding\u00a0jargon and having information.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Videos are missing- dropbox &#8211; there are videos of this conversation and the flip chart summaries are shown in session 4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">session 3 &#8211; capture\/ person-centred campaigns-movies \u00a0x3<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Last session&#8217;s homework<\/h3>\n<p>In the last session people chose to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/dementia.stir.ac.uk\">Stirling Dementia Centre<\/a> (given previous interest expressed in this)<\/li>\n<li>Visit local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzscot.org\/services_and_support\/dementia_caf_s_and_community_activities\">Dementia Cafes<\/a> or the Whiteinch <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzscot.org\/services_and_support\/search\/2049_whiteinch_west_glasgow_music_for_minds_group\">&#8216;Music for Minds&#8217;<\/a> singing group<\/li>\n<li>Shadow a colleague in a different sector or organisation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The main focus of the discussion was around the visit to the Stirling Dementia Centre<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stirling Dementia Centre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We co-ordinated the visit to the Stirling Dementia Centre, and the Dementia Link workers involved in this project volunteered to drive everyone there and back.<\/p>\n<p>The centre offers visitors\u00a0self-guided tours using an audio handset. This is free for people with dementia, those who are retired or unwaged and \u00a310 for others.\u00a0The tape lasts 30 mins, so the tour should last no more than an hour with stops and starts. The tour highlights dementia friendly design features and there are leaflets to take away. We know that many life events are frequently accompanied by music. Songs or a piece of music can take us back to our childhood and re-kindle memories of past experiences. \u00a0Musical memories are stored for a much longer time than other memories (<a title=\"Baird and Samson, 2009\" href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11065-009-9085-2#page-1\">Baird and Samson, 2009<\/a>) and we remain receptive to music till the end (<a title=\"Norberg et al, 1986\" href=\"http:\/\/www.journalofnursingstudies.com\/article\/0020-7489(86)90054-4\/abstract\">Norberg et al,1986<\/a>).\u00a0It&#8217;s something dementia cannot destroy and something we can harness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.playlistforlife.org.uk\">Playlist for Life<\/a> is a charity founded in 2013 by Sally Magnusson (broadcaster and presenter) which encourages the use of personally meaningful music on iPods for people with dementia. The range of benefits are described as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Music can help you recall memories \u2013 often associated with positive feelings (though of course, it can also bring tears)<\/li>\n<li>It can make you feel good and improve your mood \u2013 and can help if you\u2019re feeling bored, annoyed, agitated or low.<\/li>\n<li>Music reminds you of all the things you\u2019ve done over the years \u2013 giving you a stronger sense of self or identity<\/li>\n<li>By listening to music with family and friends, it can helps us feel more connected to them and can spark conversation &#8211; it\u00a0can also help care workers\u00a0get to know someone with dementia<\/li>\n<li>It can create a wonderful feeling of belonging \u2013 to your past and your family<\/li>\n<li>It can help you recall words- you might remember all the words to a favourite song while others slip by<\/li>\n<li>Music is also a positive and effective alternative to other drug treatments that my not be as effective as music or may have side effects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We thought the group would\u00a0enjoy\u00a0sharing some of their musical memories. We wanted to link into the\u00a0playlist for life campaign that is\u00a0encouraging people to make\u00a0their own playlist and we felt that this was an activity that all group members could take part in. \u00a0We had some discussion amongst the group\u00a0about the benefits of music. \u00a0We then asked people in groups of three to share a song or piece of music that was meaningful to them. Then we asked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How did that make you feel?<\/li>\n<li>Anyone want to share with the whole group, a song that is meaningful to them?<\/li>\n<li>How do you think music is beneficial to people?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After this we asked for volunteers to share some examples with the larger group. This brought laughter and tears!<\/p>\n<h3>Mapping our community assets<\/h3>\n<p>Community assets can be resources, places, activities, businesses or services (as identified by people who use the assets), to help people stay strong and well. We set out to map the assets we had locally. This was an opportunity for the group to discuss what were important resources for them and where there were gaps in local provision. We looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aliss.org\">ALISS <\/a>as one way of doing this. ALISS (A Local Information System for Scotland) is an online map of health and wellbeing resources. \u00a0It&#8217;s searchable by key word, location or within a certain mile radius. Anyone can add to it, describing resources in the words that they choose.<\/p>\n<h3>Homework<\/h3>\n<p>Homework arose from the activities we worked through at the meeting. For example, we asked everyone to complete a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iriss.org.uk\/keepingitpersonal\/files\/2014\/07\/Your-Playlist.pdf\">template<\/a> asking for information about 12 songs or pieces of music that are meaningful to them. We plan to use this to create a playlist for each person. This would give the group the opportunity to try using playlist which might have benefits for individuals and also be a resource they could share with others.<\/p>\n<p>We asked people to note any assets we had missed on our map so we could add them at the next meeting. We also asked if anyone in the group wanted\u00a0 to take the map to other groups to help make sure we hadn&#8217;t missed anything. Group members agreed to take it to their local swimming club, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annexecommunities.org.uk\">the Annexe<\/a>\u00a0(a great community resource for health and wellbeing), the North West Dementia Carers Forum and the Glenkirk Mental Health Resource Centre.<\/p>\n<h3>Feedback and evaluation<\/h3>\n<p>General feedback: All smiley faces (from a choice of smiley, unhappy and not sure) as a general gut reaction to the day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/openlx\/15246738015\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/3839\/15246738015_417d4a987c_c.jpg\" alt=\"NWGla-KIp-John-FB\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What went well?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Everyone seemed to like the community mapping exercise &#8211; practical.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Liked the task around creating a campaign for person-centred care and support.
