I am an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Elderly Care at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. I am acutely aware that elderly patient’s are not always treated as a specialist group. We have physiological changes as we grow older and these impact on our ability to cope with physical and psychological issues. Although some people cope very well into old age without requiring specific help/care there is a large number who do not and I would hope some of this work would help identify their needs and/or showcase existing best practice.

Through my practice, I have become aware of a perceived gap in the availability of validated tools to support general nurses in their assessment and care of the elderly patient. I am interested in nurse’s general knowledge of the medical specialty of Elderly Care. In particular, I focus on the use of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) to identify issues within the elderly patient group. It looks at medical, function, psychological and environmental issues. I aim to examine nurses’ knowledge of this tool and to support their knowledge of Elderly Care through a prompt care or poster.
