“Just because I\u2019m old doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m vulnerable<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

Being deemed to be vulnerable has a range of potential consequences, both to people living in the community and those admitted to hospital. Recognising vulnerability where it exists is vital, but inappropriate labeling of vulnerability can be harmful in itself. It is therefore necessary to understand vulnerability and the factors which affect our perception of state of being.<\/p>\n

I am currently employed as a Senior Nurse, as part of a multidisciplinary team, caring for adults with acute medical problems at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. The proposed research aims to explore the views older people hold in relation to vulnerability and whether or not older people actually believe themselves to be vulnerable.<\/p>\n

This research aims to investigate and compare the views of older people (people over the age of 65) both in community and hospital settings to establish whether or not they believe they are vulnerable. This research will be conducted using in-depth interviews and grounded theory as a tool for analysis.<\/p>\n

October Knowledge Exchange Event<\/strong><\/p>\n

Billie presented a preliminary overview of her research our first Knowledge Exchange event in October 2012.\u00a0 The PROP practitioner-researchers were asked to present on their impressions of the research process and to give a short outline of their research.\u00a0 Audio recording are available of both these presentations.<\/p>\n
