Are young people going to stay in care past 21?

Following the Government’s recent announcement to allow young people to stay in care until the age of 21, the big question is, are young people going to stay?

Scottish Throughcare and Aftercare Forum asked for practitioner’s opinion and this is what they told them:

“An overwhelming number of you considered Co-Production of services, between young people, practitioners and decision makers to be a key part in implementing the changes to the Children and Young People(Scotland) Bill in 2015.”

There were also some key points made by  practitioners.

  • We need to ensure young people are listened too
  • Improved multi-agency working and a wider range of accommodation resources to better suit young peoples needs.
  • Young people will want to see that the offer of continued “care” is flexible and appropriate to the development of the young person.
  • Good trusting relationships with care providers.
