Title: Outcomes for Carers – how do we ensure that training and information support contributes to positive outcomes for carers?
There is significant investment in training for Carers. This proposal aims to understand if this investment is targeted appropriately, what value Carers perceive of the training, if the approaches used reduce any barriers to engaging in training and most importantly whether the assessment and delivery of training is undertaken at the right stage ( and also meets ongoing needs at different stages).
Carers can be anyone “who looks after someone”. This can mean short or long term, any age or condition and could be a relative, partner or friend. Without the Carer in place, the support to the Carer may be reduced or may require additional time from statutory services. For a Carer to be supported to undertake the role they may require information and advice, access to advocacy, income maximisation and also training. Training may take the form of information about the condition, skills based training (such as moving and handling, first aid etc) or may be in the form of giving confidence to undertake the caring role or to protect their own health and well being, or to support their lifestyle such as assisting them to return to employment.
Through this project, I will aim to identify ways in which we are better able to identify the training needs of Carers and to deliver the appropriate support. This will include understanding the views of all stakeholders and identifying ways that could improve the assessment of need and the appropriateness of the current approach.
The project aims to ask:
- Are Carer needs identified appropriately at different stages of the journey?
- If training is identified and delivered, does it meet the Carer’s needs?
- What are the barriers to Carers engaging in training?
